Santa Photos – Austin Event Photography

We have already had two Santa Photo events, and it’s not even December yet. Whew! Things are really starting to pick up for the holidays. We have 39 events booked over the next three weeks, and a bunch of those are Santa Photos. On Saturday morning, we’ll be photographing Santa and a bunch of families and kiddos at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, and again @ The Seguin Coliseum that night.

On the 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th, we’ll be taking photographs with Santa @ Millie & Mox. They have a gorgeous custom built treehouse all set up in the parking lot of the Quinlan Park shopping center, and are selling tickets for photographs for only $10. Contact Millie and Mox for details @ 512-377-1142.

We also have several other Santa Photo events at local country clubs and holiday parties. Photographs with Santa Claus are always a blast! Even though we are extremely busy… that’s why I love this time of year!

Event Photographer Austin – Graduation & Prom Photography

It’s been a whirlwind of activity the last few weeks while we have been finishing up on our proms and graduations for the year. Prom photography continues to change each year as the seniors become more and more photography savvy. With cell phones on every hip and parents capturing photographs of their kids at home prior to prom, the portrait studio photography has really become a thing of the past. Photo booths seem to be at every prom now, and flip books have also become very popular with the students.

Prom videos are going to be the hot thing for next year. We will be offering video fusion slideshows that include posed portraits, candid photos and video clips from the prom. We expect these to be extremely popular. With our virtual background, and ability to completely customize our backgrounds to fit the prom themes, Get The Picture will be able to offer something that no other company is providing.

Here’s a photo from one of our proms this year to give you an idea of what the virtual background can do for the prom photography.

Convention & Conference Photography Austin

I spent most of this week prepping for and photographing a Gemalto Conference here in Austin. We have been very lucky to have forged a great relationship with Allied PRA and the Gemalto event is one of the conferences we worked with them on.

It’s always interesting when you work an event for an event planner. It doesn’t always go well. We have had mixed experiences with working with corporate and private event planners. Several times inn the past we have been hired by other event companies to do photography for their clients, and on a few occasions we have come up against some big challenges. Working directly with a client I always know what they expect, but when there is an event planner in the mix, I usually don’t even have a chance to talk with the event client. Remember that gossip game where you sit in a big circle and tell the person next to you something and they, in turn, are supposed to relay the same information to the person next to them until it goes all the way around the circle. Just like in that game, communication can easily get messed up with a third party in the middle. Things don’t always sound the same after being repeated through more than one person. But, as I said, with Allied PRA we haven’t had any such issues. Communication is never perfectly understood, but in general, working with Grace, Katie and the rest of the team there has always been a joy.

The Gemalto conference was especially fun to photograph. Convention and conference photography can be quite boring sometimes. Especially when the only thing photographed is rooms full of people watching a speaker at the front of the room. But with Gemalto we got to photograph a lot of fun stuff. They had a party out at The Salt Lick the first night, with dance instructors, a scavenger hunt around downtown and UT campus the next morning… beginning at the AT&T Conference Center, and a hilarious song writing and performance competition last night at the Gibson Showroom on South Congress. Gemalto is all over the world, so the attendees all spoke other languages and spoke with wonderful accents. And they sure knew how to give a photographer something great to photograph.

Here are a few of my favorites from the competition last night.

Austin Photographer – The Property Brothers

When we applied last year to be on The Property Brothers renovation show, we never dreamed that we would actaully be chosen. Of course our house was perfect because it is incredibly unique, but we still figured it was a long shot. As photographers, we dreamed of having the perfect outdoor space to photograph our clients, and the potential with Property Brothers was amazing!

We were selected to have an episode and a makeover on our home. We were so excited! But, at the last minute our financing fell through, and we had to withdraw. At first we were quite devestated, but we knew that by withdrawing some other lucky family was going to get the home of their dreams. Little did we know that we might still have an opportunity to meet the Property Brothers and participate in a show.

Last week we got a call asking if we could photograph the family that they are currently filming here in Austin. Although our main focus has been event photography, we have been working on building our family portrait studio for a couple of years now. The family has newborn twin babies and a two year old, and they hadn’t had a family portrait taken of them yet. So, on Tuesday we got to take portraits in Mayfield park of the family and their beautiful children. It was a blast! We even got to meet, and work with Drew and Jonathan… THE Property Brothers! We can’t show you any photographs because the show won’t air for several months, but as soon it does we’ll be posting images for everyone on the blog. We can’t wait to see what the designer does with our portraits in their home. :-)

STAY TUNED!

Hoops for Hope – Austin Event Photography

Yesterday Charles and I (Kate) had the extreme pleasure of participating in the first Hoops for Hope fundraiser, benefitting The Smile Never Fades, an organization that provides assistance to women affected by breast cancer. The event was a Guinness Book of World Records record attempt for the most people hula hooping for fitness. It was a blast! Bill Bastas, the founder of The Smile Never Fades, is a dear friend of ours, and a wonderful photographer! So, we were proud and honored to be able to donate our green screen photography studio to the cause. Who would have thought photographing people with hula hoops would be so fun… but it was! The Hoops For Hope logo looked great as the background for the green screen photographs, and the adults and children alike really enjoyed themselves taking pictures.

The Long Center For The Performing Arts hosted the event, and over 100 hula hoopers signed up to participate in the record attempt. Great entertainers were on board to keep the crown entertained while the participants practiced their hula hoop routine. It was a ton of fun to watch! Everyone who was photographed on the green screen raved about getting their photographs on the spot, and two people even asked about having green screen for their next events. Awesome! Maybe we’ll get to work with some of these people again. :-)

Here are some of my favorite images from the day.

Austin Photographer Trailer Crash

Well, it’s looking like we are going to have to get a new trailer. Yesterday morning our 6×10 trailer that we transport photography equipment in was hit, and when I say hit, I mean HIT by another vehicle. Luckily the trailer was attached you our Mountaineer and parked on the side of the road, so noone was in it. The driver of the other vehicle had been up all night and fell asleep at the wheel. His foot must have been really heavy on the accelerator, because our trailer was hit so hard that the entire wheel well was crushed, and the trailer was thrown up onto the curb. The trailer hitch on our Mountaineer was practically broken off in the crash. While it’s terrible to have that kind of damage to our trailer, several things made it much more easy to swallow. One, nobody was hurt. Even the guy who was in the crash had his airbag deploy, so he’s ok. And… even though he didn’t have insurance, we luckily have uninsured motorists insurance, so it looks like we will be covered… minus the $250 deductible. Of course I’m waiting on the insurance company to confirm that, but I’m hopeful. Also, we are almost finished with our proms and graduations, so we do not need the trailer for those anymore. All in all, things could have turned out much worse.

I must put in a big plug for having uninsured motorist coverage. Even though the accident wasn’t our fault, if we hadn’t had that our deductible would have been a lot higher. Protect yourself and your equipment with insurance coverage. You never know when something crazy like this can happen.

Baby Photography Austin

Our new portrait division, Caudillo Studios, photographed two beautiful babies on Monday in the children’s homes. It is go gratifying to be able to create something as beautiful as a first portrait for a family. I know that my art will be in their home for years and years, giving their family pleasure and enjoyment. And, portraits are doubly wonderful for newborns and young babies. For parents, especially new parents, those first few months fly by. The baby changes so quickly, and you hardly get to enjoy their tiny little fingers and toes amidst the diapers and long sleepless nights. Our work gives those moms and dads the chance to enjoy how beautiful and perfect their baby is for years to come.

Monday we were blessed and honored to take portraits of a week and a half old newborn baby boy, and a precious little 4 month old baby girl. Both babies were adorable! The newborn was surprisingly alert for such a young baby. His mother and I joked about how big he was. We weren’t able to fit him comfortably into either of our new baby posing bowls. :-(  We still got to use some of our new baby props, and the session turned out to be a huge success. I can’t wait to finish retouching the images.

The baby girl was a joy to photograph as well. She smiled so wonderfully at the begining that we looked forward to a fun and easy photography session with Mom’s helping hand. Our new baby pom pom hat looked so cute on her. And, we got to use some of our other new props as well. Her photographs are going to be wonderful.

I’ll get some images online as soon as they are ready so that you can see how amazing these babies did.

Austin Photography – NFL Golf Classic 2012

This morning I had the pleasure of photographing the Center For Child Protection’s NFL Golf Classic 2012. Last night when the thunder was shaking the house and the kids were clambering around scared of the lightening flashes, I wondered if the tournament was going to be able to run as planned. Even this morning as I was getting ready and driving to the golf course, I wasn’t sure if I would be rained on all day while photographing the players and their NFL pros. But amazingly as I drove out to the 18th tee to photograph the first golf team, the sun began to show it’s face. Last night’s forecast was 80% chance of thunderstorms today. We were blessed with cool breezes and even a patch or two of blue sky. The entire time I was out photographing the teams, we didn’t have a single drop of rain! Woo Hoo!

The golf tournament was a lot of fun as always. We took pictures of 32 teams of 5 and delivered about 170 5×7 photographs on the spot @ The Hills of Lakeway Golf Course. The players were all in good spirits, and enjoyed having me, the photographer, take their photographs with their NFL pro. It was a great morning! Now I’m off to take portraits of the Akins High School Band Banquet. This event will be completely different… indoors, formal with virtual backgrounds. I’m sure glad for the diversity of my profession. There’s never a dull moment in event photography.

Family Photographer Austin

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and as we have for years, we are taking family portraits at The Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. Using our virtual background system, we are able to provide different background options for their guests every year. This is a big plus because the guests who attend every year can have a wonderful new portrait taken of their family each Mother’s Day, and they will never have two that look alike.

Tomorrow we are photographing the NFL Classic for the Center For Child Protection at the Lakeway Resort & Spa Hills Country Club. Every golf tournament team will have an NFL  player. I must admit… it’s one of my favorite golf tournaments to photograph all year! :-)

There are no proms this weekend, but we’ll be photographing more next weekend, and then it’s on to graduations. Woo Hoo! This year is sure flying by!
